WA homes built or substantially renovated after 1 July 1997 must have hard-wired smoke alarms with battery backup. They are required at every level + outside sleeping areas under AS 3786.
Most common. Hard-wired alarm runs on mains but has a 9v or 10-year lithium backup. When the backup falls below threshold, single beep every 30-60 sec. Replace the battery. If lithium-sealed (10-year), the whole unit must be replaced.
AS 3786 requires alarm replacement every 10 years. Older units chirp continuously even with a fresh battery. Check the manufacture date on the back. By law, the whole unit must be replaced.
Build-up triggers false alarms or single chirps. Vacuum the alarm exterior monthly. Replace if cleaning does not resolve.
In multi-alarm homes, a fault on the interconnect signal can trigger all alarms briefly. Licensed electrician check required.
If your alarm is hard-wired (not plug-in), replacement is a licensed-sparky job under AS/NZS 3000. The work must be notified to EnergySafety WA.
