An RCD (Residual Current Device) trips when it detects current leaking to earth, usually within 30 milliseconds. That is protective, not faulty. The question is what is causing the leakage.
Aged kettles, washing machines, fridges, and old halogen downlight transformers are the top culprits. Plug them out one-by-one and reset the RCD between each to find which trips it.
Perth summer storms drive water into eaves, garden outlets, and patio downlights. The water creates an earth leakage path. Wait for the wet area to dry then reset.
Homes wired pre-1980 with rubber-sheath cable shed insulation as it ages. The leakage rises gradually until the RCD trips intermittently. Diagnostic insulation-resistance testing required, that is a sparky job.
Salt-water pool environments + outdoor electrical = high earth-leakage failure rate. A licensed electrician + pool technician should test together.
Solar inverters with internal earth-fault detection occasionally trip the house RCD on startup. CEC-accredited solar tech needed.
After 10+ years RCDs themselves become hyper-sensitive. Replacement under AS/NZS 3000:2018 is a sparky job.
